Growing up in a rural community where I was the only deaf/HOH individual, it was difficult to connect with other people. It was even harder to find people who understood situations or the struggles I endured. SNRP was a place where I found other people just like me that I could relate to. I found people who could understand and help me through my problems and vice versa. It was a safe space for me to branch out, meet new people, and try out new experiences. I felt safe, like I could be myself and all the adults/counselors were so understanding. I wasn’t embarrassed about my cochlear implants, I was proud to be deaf because other people were, too. Rock climbing, snorkeling, ice skating, horseback riding, visiting the Space Museum, Mount Rushmore, and watching the Blue Man Group are just a few things I got to experience throughout my time in these programs. This is a great opportunity others can take advantage of as I improved my communication, teamwork, people, social, and life skills. To this day, I still talk to the friends that I have made throughout these experiences of a lifetime that I will cherish and never forget. Samantha Our daughter went through SNRP from age 3 until she completed high school. The experiences she gained through her participation were nothing less than exceptional. The diversity of activities built a great appreciation for theater and arts programs. The program also allowed her to meet and develop friendships with kids from across the state with similar disabilities. She has many lasting friendships as a result. Overall the program was a great experience for our daughter. Eric SNRP is a great program and an opportunity to meet your fellow deaf and hard of hearing peers in the region and across the state. I have been to nearly every event and activities since pre-school and I have learned a lot and enjoyed it. I highly encourage the young deaf and hard of hearing Nebraskans to get involved with the program, meet new people, learn new things, and explore!
